Movie review score
5

2010 was no different than any other year when it came to quantum of flops at the box office. In fact if at one has to look at a record, it was a dubious one created with far greater number of multi crore box office disasters that one has seen in the past. No wonder, Bollywood bled and how with crores going down the drain. Yet again..

Kites

"Kites" opened great and garnered close to 30 crores over the weekend. The film failed to hold on though as it proved to be a totally notched up affair with hardly anyone stating much positive about the film. The pace at which the negative word of mouth spread for the film was unbelievable as never before in the history of Bollywood cinema has a movie seen such widespread reactions from people in such less time period. In fact it was quite apparent that even Roshans had given up. Result? This hugely priced film folded up just under 50 crores, hence proving to be the first ever huge flop that had actually netted such a huge total.

Raavan

When "Raavan" opened to below average houses all over, was mauled by audience as well as critics and showed no improvement over the weekend, it was certain that this Mani Ratnam film won"t even become a respectable disaster like "Kites". Respectable? Because "Kites", despite all its negatives and nothing much to write home about, still managed a good first weekend for itself that helped it come closer to the 50 crore mark. However for "Raavan", if the poor start wasn"t enough, it only nosedived over the week. This meant that while the first week stood in the vicinity of 25 crores, there were no takers for "Raavan" in days to follow with overall collections not even touching the 30 crore mark.

Action Replayy

Opening Friday for "Action Replayy" was a shocker as due to its head-on collision with "Golmaal 3", it collected a mere 3 crores on the first day. It was crystal clear that audience had decided "Golmaal 3" to be their first choice and with less than 25 crores coming in after a one week run, the film"s fate was sealed with the overall collections just hovering around the 30 crores mark. Had the film not arrived in the same week as "Golmaal 3", it would have done better. Reason being that audience wanted to watch only one film over the weekend and since "Golmaal 3" had such huge brand value attached to it, the choice had already been made.

Guzaarish

After "Saawariya", Sanjay Leela Bhansali delivered another box office debacle in the form of "Guzaarish". A disaster, "Guzaarish" would at least be a respected failure, what with those who watched the film appreciating it for it"s worth. The film failed to garner even a 50% opening which meant that this mighty expensive film was on a huge back foot right from it"s very first show. Not many stepped in to watch the film and even the word of mouth didn"t quite turn fantastical enough for this Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai starrer to turn things around. With a mere 22 crores coming in at the end of first week, the film breathed it"s last at 30 crores mark.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey

There have been box office debacles and there would be box office debacles. However the one as evidenced in case of "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey" is totally unbelievable. In a year where "Kites", "Raavan" and "Guzaarish" have been termed as disasters despite collections ranging between 30 crores - 50 crores, what can one say about this film where the opening week was not even 5 crores? Let alone giving a thumbs-down to the film, audience just didn"t even step in even though there were a handful of good reviews that came the film"s way. This Ashutosh Gowariker film is the biggest box office disaster of the year with collections ending below the 6 crores mark.

Rakht Charitra I and II

There was a lot expected from "Rakht Charitra" and though both Part I and II did decent to good business down South, in Hindi they were no-shows. The combined collections of both the films failed to cross the 10 crores mark, hence turning out to be mighty disappointing for the makers. While Part I was touted to be a major comeback for Vivek Oberoi, Part II was a launch pad for South superstar Suriya. However the film failed in its endeavour on both ends. Blame it on excessive violence but the fact remains that these films were an ironical case of good films going unnoticed.

Jhootha Hi Sahi

"Jhootha Hi Sahi" turned out to be the biggest disappointment ever in John Abraham"s eight year long career. Now that"s quite ironical because this is yet another film after "Dostana", "New York" and "Aashayein" where he garnered appreciation from those who watched his act. Still, while he was showing gradual improvement over the craft with every passing year, he has been hit hard with "Jhootha Hi Sahi" not even taking an opening despite a big release. The film could collect only 9 crores in the first week which was a very low number, especially considering the fact that there was a huge budget allocated to the making of the film. With its final total standing just over 10 crores, "Jhootha Hi Sahi" just failed to find any takers.

Lamhaa

"Lamhaa" was pretty much ignored as audience didn"t care less for a film that was sold as an "issue based" outing. Mixed reviews followed minimal word of mouth from audience as well since not many were even aware about the film being released; let aside talking positively or negatively about it. An 8 crore first week means that the film turned out to be an out and out disappointing fare for its makers. A disaster at the box office with its eventual total being in 10 crores vicinity, "Lamhaa" was yet another major failure for Sanjay Dutt this year other than "Knock Out".

Aakrosh

Law of averages caught up with Ajay Devgn with "Aakrosh" failing at the box office. A film about honour killing, "Aakrosh" turned out to be an honourable flop at the box office. The film just didn"t open well and it was clear that audience were not in any mood whatsoever to check out what Priyadarshan had to offer in his dramatic venture. After a one week run, this Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna had a mere 11 crore opening which was very bad by all means. Poor collections with a lifetime total of under 15 crores was also particularly disheartening because film was appreciated not just by the critics but also those from the "aam junta" who caught it in theaters.

Dulha Mil Gaya

Pathetic reviews coupled with lukewarm word of mouth meant that the procession of "Dulha Mil Gaya" didn"t really boast of many "baraatis". The film did have Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen as the star attraction but the audience still pretty much got the picture that it was all a cover job with "Dulha Mil Gaya" actually being the story of Fardeen Khan and new find Ishita Sharma. Result? A mere 3 crores first week with an eventual wrap at under 4 crores. A huge box office diaster that featured Shah Rukh Khan in a substantial role unlike a guest appearance in "Billu".
